Hoopstad, Goldfields Region, Free State

Hoopstad is a tiny northern Free State town in the Goldfields Region near the border with the North West Province.

Hoopstad was establised in the late 1800’s and has several examples of the sandstone architecture typical of the region and time, including a small but pretty church.

Hoopstad’s principle attractions are the nearby Sandveld Nature Reserve and the Bloemhof Dam on the Vaal River, one of the largest dams in South Africa and the location of several National and International fishing competitions.

Other than that, Hoopstad is centrally located in the South Africa’s Maize Triangle, with a small town economy based primarily on agriculture.

Getting there: Hoopstad lies on the R700, about 2 hours drive north of Bloemfontein.
