The Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve of 70,000ha stretches from Elgin in the south to beyond Villiersdorp in the north, and from the Stellenbosch Mountains in the west, eastwards to the Groenland Mountains. Established for the conservation of mountain fynbos, with approximately 1300 species occurring here, including several rare and endemic plants, there are also small populations of buck and about 110 bird species. Leopard also frequent these mountains but are seldom seen.
The reserve, best known for its hikes and kloofing in a beautiful landscape, has rugged mountainous terrain, with unpredictable weather conditions. Summers are generally mild and dry but winters can have high rainfall.
There are several day walks and overnight trails along which the reserve can be explored.
Palmiet hiking trail (2 hours) offers a self-guided hiking trail for the visually impaired and people confined to wheelchairs.
The popular Boland Hiking Trail starts at the Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve. Various routes of one to three days, covering distances between 5 km and 50 km. Overnight huts are provided for hikers doing overnight routes.
Kloofing in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is a popular attraction among adventure seekers. The routes are open from November to the end of April and closed in winter due to flooding.

If you love mountain biking, the reserve offers the Groenlandberg MTB trail, a 22km out and back track which starts at the Nuweberg gate and takes two to three hours. The natural obstacles are a challenge, with steep climbs and descents. It is best to go in summer when the going is dry.
The entrance to the reserve is at Nuweberg, high in Viljoen’s Pass approximately 11km from Grabouw, between Grabouw and Villiersdorp.
