Making use of some of her existing furniture, Liesl Heath turned this pool room into a stylish living area for her family.
To accommodate a much needed home office, Liesl Heath, owner of Couch + Interiors in Durban, and her husband, Wade, came up with the idea of building a double-storey structure on one side of their property with the office on top and a pool room on the ground floor. “As we wanted an easy flow from the pool room to the swimming pool, we specified custom-made stacking doors which effectively connect the two.”
To break up the long, narrow pool room, they divided it into dining and sitting areas but used the same colours in both areas tor continuity. Liesl’s inspiration for the decor was a bold floral wallpaper from which the scheme evolved. “As far as furniture was concerned, we had an existing corner seating unit, a table that we bought about 20 years ago, a server and an oriental cupboard which I wanted to incorporate into the scheme.”
Assisted by Chevaunne Allers, one of her interior designers, she had the dark TV cupboard and server painted off-white for a fresher look. They introduced a couple of Ghost chairs and two new benches in the dining area using UV-resistant fabric for the cushions. A heavy-duty jute rug was brought in to add a touch of cosiness.

“Our family now spends a great deal of time out here. We find it really convenient as we can keep an eye on the children in the pool while we relax and entertain,” says Liesl.
