Ster-Kinekor's Throwback Cinema: Nostalgia Meets the Big Screen Again in July!

After a resounding success in May and June, Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema is back for another month of cinematic nostalgia. This beloved promotion, which brought classic blockbusters like “Chicago,” “Notting Hill,” and “Back to the Future” to the big screen for just R50 per ticket, will continue to enchant audiences throughout July.

Kicking off the extended lineup on July 5 is Mel Gibson’s epic “Braveheart,” followed by the heartwarming drama “Steel Magnolias” on July 12. Action-adventure enthusiasts can look forward to “The Mummy Returns” on July 19, and the month wraps up with the timeless romance “Pretty Woman” on July 26.

“Throwback Cinema allows us to bring back some timeless films for our customers to relive and enjoy once again, at a very affordable ticket price,” said Lynne Wylie, Ster-Kinekor’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We’ve had a wonderful time going through the catalogues to select the films, and we are sure everyone who books a ticket to watch one of them will have a similar big-screen experience.”

This nostalgic offering is available at select cinemas, including Sandton, Fourways, and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Ilanga in Mbombela; Gateway in Umhlanga; Somerset Mall in Somerset West; Tygervalley and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town; and The Grove in Windhoek, Namibia.

The cinema giant has also cut the number of planned closures from nine locations to two, a significant move to maintain its presence and serve its loyal audience base. Amidst a challenging economic environment, load-shedding issues, and the impact of Hollywood strikes, Ster-Kinekor is diversifying its screening options to boost attendance. “The impact of the strikes was to halt production of movies and create a 12 to 18-month delay in releasing titles originally scheduled for release in 2024,” added Sardi.

The Throwback Cinema promotion is a testament to Ster-Kinekor’s commitment to delivering memorable cinematic experiences, despite the hurdles.
