ShowMe South Africa had the pleasure of interviewing Jemaine:
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Jemaine Julies, age 24, I was born in Worcester and have lived in Stanford over the past 10 years. I have always been a sucker for playing chess games.
My journey with music started at a young age, as I always had a good feeling for music. However, I could not put my finger on the style that I wanted to perform one day.
I love Afrikaans poems, as they trigger my mind into seeing stories from different perceptions. Afrikaans is very attractive, especially the deep Soulful RnB music.
My goal is to be a legend in Afrikaans and yes, I realise legendary is given by the people, however, it drives me to work harder and do things differently than others.
How did your music career start?
It’s actually a funny story as I started off as a dancer, and the people in Stanford used to call me Michael Jackson because I could do almost everything Michael could. However, as I developed as a dancer, something felt amiss. So I asked myself, who Am I and who do I want to be known as? So I created my own style.
My Afrikaans RnB/Soul came from my childhood days. I used to wake up in the morning listening to the old-school type of vibe in our home, the Sam Cooke, Dobey Grey style. I decided I wanted to hear and feel the love of music through every song I sing and currently, this is where I am. The best part was that people started loving my vibe.
What has been your most difficult experience in the music industry?
It is difficult to get exposure where it is needed. I live in an area where being an artist or having a dream isn’t very popular. So I strive to earn my own stripes by drawing in people who ask questions, such as, who is Jemaine Julies? This game plan is currently still working.
What has been your most amazing experience in the music industry?
Connecting with different artists all over South Africa and realising that it’s not only me who struggles to get noticed. But mostly, I am able to contribute to the Afrikaans language through my music and in my own style.
What inspires you to write your songs?
My 7-month-old daughter and her future friends, who will be the future generation of tomorrow.
