Jericho, Bojanala Platinum, North West Province

Jericho, North West Province, South Africa

The grandly named Jericho in the North West Province of South Africa is in fact a very small settlement situated near the entrance to the Borakalalo National Park, one of the South Africa’s SANPARK’s owned Safari destinations in the North West.

Situated in the north western corner of South Africa, Jericho is hot and dry for much of the year, and Borakalalo (which means ‘The place where people relax’) offers 14000ha of malaria-free game viewing in pristine bushveld, riverine bush and woodlands. The Moratele River flows through the Park and the are is known for its beauty. One of the North West most accessible safari destinations (ie very inexpensive), with abundant wildlife and bird species, Borakalalo makes for a super camping, game viewing and birding weekend break from Gauteng, Hartbeespoort and Rustenburg.

There is also an 800ha dam in the Park that is known for excellent fishing, with various species on the permitted catch list. You can also enjoy walking trails in Borakalalo, as the only large predator is Leopard, which is a nocturnal species and shy of humans.

The Jericho area, which is called Ga-Rankuwa is very rural. Look out for roadside stalls selling local arts and crafts, including the striking Ndebele Crafts the North West is known for, as well as locally grown fruit and veg.

Getting there: Jericho is situated 40km north of the town of Brits on Van Deventer Street.
