Kanoneiland is the biggest river island in South Africa and is situated in the Orange (Gariep) River, 23km from Upington. The island was cleared for large scale farming in 1928, and acres of vineyards have been cultivated. The truly beautiful island is one huge emerald green quilt of vines, watered by canal irrigation, which offers a wonderful environment to explore by car, or even better, to stay over. One can enjoy the traditional meals of the islanders as well as the delicious locally produced wines.
The tranquillity and beauty of this area attracts many visitors. Kanoneiland is one not to be missed!
Take the N14 from Upington or Keimoes and turn off at Kanoneiland.
