La Motte Wine Estate, Franschhoek, Western Cape

La Motte Wine Estate, Franschhoek, Western CapeThe La Motte Wine Estate, situated in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley is an absolute must for visitors wishing to tour the winelands of the Western Cape. The estate is owned by Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg, daughter of one of South Africa’s business icons, Dr Anton Rupert. Although the La Motte Estate produces some of the best wines in South Africa, the estate is far more than a wine farm.

The estate also cultivates flowers from which ethereal oils are produced and has a strong commitment to bio-diversity and conservation. With a view to creating public awareness of nature and affording its visitors the opportunity of exploring the beauty of its mountain, La Motte has created a hiking trail along the foothills behind the estate. Nature lovers can now get really close to some of La Motte’s greatest treasures – the abundant bird-life, a protea garden, a wealth of indigenous flora and, occasionally, a gaze of surprise from a member of the fauna population. To crown it all, of course, the breathtaking vistas of the Franschhoek Valley.

The museum is an interesting walk through the lives of the Rupert family as well as the history of Cape Dutch architecture and the historical buildings on the estate. One room of the museum is dedicated to the famous South African artist Pierneef. The La Motte Historic Walk offers an interesting and educational 45 minutes outdoor excursion, conducted by a well-informed host sharing fascinating facts about the estate and its colourful history. Hanneli Rupert, one of South Africa’s leading mezzo-sopranos holds monthly musical concerts.
