The 8000ha award-winning Lammergeier Private Nature Reserve near Lady Grey in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg is well known among the mountain-biking community, and it is also the venue of the annual 80km Lammergeier MTB Challenge.
There are several trails through the reserve, through mountain terrain between 1,700 m to 2,750 m above sea level, with some steep downhills and rocky paths.
Mountain-biking trails are rated as moderately difficult and technical, and there are many other activities on offer at this well-known outdoors destination – from adventure racing camps to horse-riding trails, hiking trails, trout fishing and hunting (winter season only).
Lammergeier is also a great bird-watching destination, with almost 300 species recorded on the reserve, including the rare and endangered Bearded Vulture (the Lammergeier) for which the reserve is named.
Guesthouse accommodation is available on the reserve.
Getting there: The nearest town is Lady Grey. Head south on Stephenson Street and continue on for about 27km.
