In the latest adidas Originals campaign titled “We Gave the World an Original. You Gave Us a Thousand Back,” prominent figures Ama Qamata, Pamela Mntanga, and Que DJ take center stage.
As 2023 marks a new era for the brand, Adidas Originals pays tribute to those who have consistently propelled its iconic symbol, the Trefoil, into the realm of culture.
This celebration follows the successful global launch of “We Gave the World an Original,” which commemorates three original Adidas silhouettes and the enduring Trefoil logo—a symbol that has thrived for over 50 years, adorning the feet of athletes and cultural trailblazers alike.
Locally, the campaign features actress Ama Qamata, media personality, and fashion influencer Pamela Mtanga, and the talented Gqom producer, DJ, and fashion powerhouse Que DJ. “We Gave the World an Original. You Gave Us a Thousand Back” heralds a new chapter for the iconic Trefoil.
At the heart of this campaign are three films and a collection of stills arranged in triptychs. Each piece focuses on three timeless silhouettes from adidas’s storied Three Stripes archive—the Superstar, the Gazelle, and the Samba. These narratives intertwine the Trefoil’s history with the ways these iconic styles, initially rooted in sports, have been embraced, reimagined, and integrated into culture time and again.
The first iconic Trefoil is the Adidas Original Superstar, initially designed for basketball but embraced by the world of Hip Hop. Its classic leather construction and timeless silhouette transformed the game both on and off the court, making it an enduring icon.
Ama Qamata, star of “Blood & Water,” shared her perspective on being Original: “Being Original means having the confidence and boldness to be yourself, understanding your identity and roots. I’ve always been deliberate about my life, knowing what I wanted to achieve, and that has paved the way for me. I see Africa thriving in our industry, and I want to contribute to making it better.”
The Gazelle, initially a trainer, has journeyed from podiums to skate parks worldwide. Its lightweight suede upper and gum sole have become symbols of innovation and diverging from the conventional path. Que DJ, the talented Gqom producer and DJ, described what Original means in his musical realm: “To me, Original signifies boldness, forward thinking, style, and excellence. My unique artistic approach and creative music-making set me apart. Nostalgia plays a significant role in my music. Growing up in KwaMashu, from school parties to cyphers, I draw from my experiences and emotions. Being on stage, sharing my story, and experiencing complete freedom—freedom of expression, movement, body, and soul—make it all worthwhile and keep the art alive.”
Completing the trio is the Samba. Initially gaining recognition in soccer, this shoe’s low-profile silhouette and gum sole have become synonymous with defying trends. Fashionista and award-winning multimedia entrepreneur Pamela elaborated on what it means to be enough for oneself and to be Original: “People who lack self-assurance often label others as inadequate or imperfect. Amidst the chaos, one must drown out the noise and find their voice. Being Original means showing up as your authentic self every day, acknowledging the uniqueness within you that the world needs to witness and experience. Take a moment to celebrate yourself.”
