Lourensford Wine Estate, Helderberg Wine Route, Western Cape

Lourensford Wine Estate, Somerset West, Western Cape

Lourensford Wine Estate formed part of the Vergelegen farm which was established by Willem Adriaan van der Stel in the 17th century. Lourensford is steeped in history going way back to 1700 when it was separated from Vergelegen. Situated at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, it is arguably one of the most beautiful wine estates in the world. The excellent soils and varied micro-climates create the perfect conditions for the creation of a diverse range of world-class wines.

The estate was purchased by the renowned South African business magnate, Dr. Christo Wiese, in 1998 and since then 300Ha of vines have been planted and an ultra modern cellar was completed in 2003. No expense has been spared to make Lourensford one of the leading wine estates in South Africa if not in the world. These outstanding wines have made their mark on the international market – the Lourensford 1700, a striking blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, and the Lourensford Viognier, truly an exceptional and delightful Chardonnay-style wine.

Lourensford’s scenic beauty has played host to many local and international film shoots, starring some of Hollywood’s top actors. Not only do they host annual sports and cultural events with thousands of participants and spectators, but many a wedding reception and corporate function has been held on the estate. There is a sizeable equestrian establishment on the estate, with stabling as well as one of the only two polo fields in Cape Town.

The Restaurant is open daily from 08h00 until 17h00 and in addition to lunch a selection of delicious breakfasts and freshly baked treats such as chocolate brownies, scones and to die for cheese cake are served. The estate is open for wine tasting at the following times:

Monday – Sunday: 09h30 – 16h30

Public Holidays: 09h00 – 16h00
