Mamelodi Sundowns Edge Out Chiefs in a Tense Soccer City Showdown
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in a dramatic Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash at Soccer City on 28 September 2024 Saturday afternoon. The win solidifies Sundowns’ dominance, extending their unbeaten run, while Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the season in front of a packed FNB Stadium.
The match, initially delayed by 30 minutes due to the large crowds and traffic from a nearby Comic Con event, kicked off with electric energy in the stands. Chiefs, eager to redeem themselves after their 5-1 hammering by Sundowns last season, entered the game riding high on two consecutive wins under new coach Nasreddine Nabi.
The Amakhosi faithful had renewed hope, especially after a 2-1 comeback against Marumo Gallants and a commanding 3-1 victory over AmaZulu. They were determined to end their six-match winless streak against the defending champions, Sundowns.
Sundowns, however, came into the match brimming with confidence. With commanding wins over SuperSport United and Marumo Gallants, they sat at the top of the league table and were determined to stay there. Manqoba Mngqithi’s side approached the game with their usual calmness, fully aware of the threat Chiefs posed but confident in their unbeaten form.
The home side started brightly, igniting their supporters when Ranga Chivaviro found the back of the net with a clinical finish. Chiefs fans erupted in joy, believing this could be the day they finally toppled Sundowns.
But the defending champions remained unfazed. Just before halftime, Lucas Ribeiro capitalized on a well-executed team move to equalize, leaving the sides locked at 1-1 as they headed into the break.
The second half saw tensions rise as both teams pushed for the lead. Sundowns found their breakthrough when Iqraam Rayners slotted home a controversial goal. Despite Chiefs’ protests for offside, the goal stood, swinging the momentum in Sundowns’ favor.
Chiefs launched a flurry of late attacks, with Edson Castillo and Ashley Du Preez leading the charge. However, Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was in imperious form, denying every attempt to keep his side ahead. Chiefs thought they had snatched a dramatic equalizer when Castillo scored in the dying moments, but the goal was ruled offside, crushing their hopes.
In the end, Mamelodi Sundowns held firm to claim all three points, extending their unbeaten start to the season. Chiefs, despite their valiant efforts, were left ruing missed chances in what was a thrilling PSL encounter at Soccer City.
