Middelburg, Stainless Steel Capital of South Africa

The large farming and mining centre of Middelburg is one of the larger towns in Mpumalanga, and is called the ‘Stainless Steel Capital of Africa’. Middelburg is situated on the banks of the Klein Olifants River, and has a rich ‘Voortrekker’ and Boer War history, with monuments and buildings that pay tribute to its past. It also has a rich African cultural heritage tanks to the township of Mhluzi which developed simultaneously with Middelburg and was integrated into Greater Middelburg in 1994.

However, it is the more topographically interesting nature and outdoors offerings and activities around ‘flat’ Middelburg that really puts this town on the map. Barely an hour’s drive from Pretoria, there are many things to do around Middelburg and many nearby attractions. The town is also perfectly positioned en-route to the Highland Meander, Panorama Route and Lowveld Regions of Mpumlalanga.

Nearby attractions include the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve, de Voedpadkloof Nature Reserve, many resorts offering outdoors activities, hiking trails such as the Broodboom Cycad Hiking Trail, Buffalo Gorge Horse Trails and bass and trout fishing at various locations.
