Minwater Farm is bursting with the flora and fauna of the Succulent Karoo and is owned by Louis Jordaan who has devoted the last 27 years to the study of this biome. A special experience is to take a hike in the company of Louis who will reveal to you the importance of every bush, insect, flower and bird in this scenic landscape. Detailed hiking maps are provided.
Minwater also has four 4×4 trails – the “Rooiberg” trail, the “Steenbokrant” trail, the “Sandberg” trail and the “Kloof” trail. The full distance of the 4 x 4 trails is approximately 30km (6-8 hours). The trails range from very easy – suitable for inexperienced drivers in 4×4’s without low range and 4×2’s with diff lock to very difficult – loads of experience, a serious 4×4 and recovery equipment imperative; diff locks strongly recommended. The most difficult trails or sections of trail can all be avoided. A detailed route map will be supplied.
Accommodation facilities include three bush camps with running water and plenty of shade. Hot showers and toilets are provided along with firewood. The sites are suitable for campers of all ages – from diapers to dentures. Next to the Moeras River there is another camping site which is accessible with caravans. One of the lapas is partially roofed. On the terrain is an old mill house which provides shelter during unpleasant weather conditions. This terrain is also suitable for small conferences and functions.
Directions: From the centre of Oudtshoorn, follow the road to Calitzdorp for 9 km and turn left on the Volmoed road. Turn right onto the Paardebont road after 11 km and right into Minwater after 4 km.
