Montagu Wine and Spirits Company was created when the Uitvlucht and Rietrivier Cellar combined on the 1st January 2010. Uitvlucht was the original farm on which the town of Montagu was established in 1853 and the Rietrivier Wine Cellar was founded in 1963. The Rietrivier farm is situated about 27Km from Montagu on Route 62 on the way to Barrydale.
Well known for its award winning Muscadel, the winery now produces a full range of wines – Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinotage as well as a vintage port. Numerous awards have been garnered by these wines including gold, silver and bronze medals at the Veritas Show Awards, National Young Wine Show and the Klein Karoo Young Wine Show. The winery also produces a top quality brandy.
The cellar supports the SA Biodiversity and Wine Initiative and is dedicated to preserving the ecology of the area. The wine growing area straddles many different microclimates and soil conditions and the Uitvlucht vineyards are situated at an altitude of between 400 m and 700 m. The Muscadels are grown in the fertile river beds.
The tasting room is in the original cellar building just off Bath Street in Montagu on the renowned Route 62 and is open daily.
