Morgenster Wine Estate, Somerset West, Western Cape

Morgenster Wine Estate has a 300 year history as an off shoot of the original Vergelegen farm. It was purchased by the French Huguenot, Jacques Malan, whose son, Daniel, built the much praised manor house, recognized as a perfect example of Cape Dutch architecture of the time. The front “holbol” gable, with its delicate scrollwork and scallop shell apex framing the morning star, is considered one of the finest existing examples of the baroque style in the Cape.

Guilio Bertrand bought the farm in 1992 and set about restoring the historical buildings to their former glory. The first vineyards of the modern era were planted in 1994 concentrating on reds – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The winemaker focuses on growing the right clones to get the perfect blend – Morgenster’s forte. More recently, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo have been added. The wines have achieved numerous awards both locally and overseas including gold medals at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards

The estate is also a producer of the well known Morgenster olive oil. Morgenster Extra Virgin olive oil has received 97 points out of 100 for the third year running in the Flos Olei guide. The highest score achieved and Morgenster is the only Extra Virgin Olive oil from South Africa to receive this rating. Other achievements from 2011 are: a Gold medal in the SA Olive Awards, a Silver medal at the Los Angeles Country Fair and Prestige Gold medal winner at the TerraOlivo competition in Israel.
