The 1200ha Union Trails Estate just outside Fouriesburg in the Eastern Free State Highlands is an MTB enthusiast’s dream come true.
The Estate features a number of trails, both natural and crafted, for all levels of experience.
Not only do the trails make the most of the natural surroundings, they are designed by a highly experienced mountain biking enthusiast who has travelled extensively and ridden mtb trails in the Rocky Mountains in the US, the Alps in Europe, in South America and various locations in Africa.
The Free State Highlands terrain offers a scenic mtb experience as well as some fairly challenging rides, the riding is said to be some of the best in South Africa, with many unique features thanks to the peculiar sandstone rock formations, cliffs and gorges and occurrences of ‘sandstone slickrock’.
There is catered accommodation on the Estate for up to 8 people. The Estate and surrounding area also offer a variety of other activities including hiking, birding, 4×4, horse-riding, fishing, kayaking and white water rafting near Clarens, only 30 minutes drive away.
Day visitors are also welcomed, with a nominal fee charged for use of the trails.
Getting there: The Union House Estate and Trails is situated a few kilometres from Fouriesburg. From Fouriesburg take the R711 south for just under 9km.
