This 91-km, circuit route is an ideal ride for endurance training. The route is very scenic, meandering through the foothills of the Drakensberg. It is all along secondary dirt roads, except for a 21-km tarred stretch at the end of the route.
The Normandien Pass is the highlight of the ride. Stop and admire the view from ‘Noah’s Ark’, which is a large rock shaped like a boat, at the 57km mark. Ahead of you lies Newcastle and the charming Chelmsford Dam. The descent down Normandien Pass is steep and technically demanding, so make sure your brakes are in order.
Getting there: From Newcastle, take Scott Street past the town hall towards Pick ‘n Pay. Follow this road for 15km. Follow signs and turn left to Chelmsford Dam. Continue until you see signs to Mullers Pass, which is where the trail starts.
