The Mzanzi Zulu Quilt Centre in the Kwazulu-Natal Midlands is a special place with a special story. 11 years ago, local people from the poor area of Sweetwaters endorsed the Rotary concept of being ‘ever mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves’ and began training local people to make quilts.
For seven years, over fifty locals operated out of an old bus depot, making enough quilts and slowly building their standards to open their own centre in the main tourist route of Kwazulu-Natal. In January 2008, Mzanzi was opened. Now, the centre trains no less than 25 people a week to become quilters, at no charge.
Quilters from all over the world visit the centre to buy and promote their product, and Mzanzi quilts have, with the help of Rotary International, been sold and promoted at auctions all over the world.
Getting there: From Durban, take the N3 and turn off at Cedara. Turn right over N3 and follow the road two Kilometres to posted signs (Mzansi Zulu Quilt Centre).
