Nelspruit is the capital city of Mpumalanga and is the most developed metropol in the province. Nelspruit is also known as Mbombela, and many like to refer to Nelspruit with this traditional and affectionate name.
Many tourists choose Nelspruit as the ideal base from which to explore the exciting province of Mpumalanga. It is another of the Mpumalanga towns that serves as an ideal gateway to the beautiful lowveld and the Kruger National Park, in particular. But Nelspruit offers many more attractions as a tourist destination itself than some of the other lowveld towns.
Visit the Nelspruit National Botanical Garden (which boasts the world’s first man-made rain forest), the Nelspruit Reptile Park, the Sudwala Caves and the Nelspruit Nature Reserve (don’t miss out on the Green Heritage Trail – showcasing the magnificent indigenous vegetation). Don’t miss out on the Nelspruit Historical Trail, a 1hr trail that takes you around the town and gives a great sense of the rich history in this area.
Nelspruit is one of the warmest and most pleasant towns to visit in Mpumalanga, and with its lush vegetation, rich history and warm, welcoming sunshine (and people) it is a place you just have to visit on any journey into Mpumalanga.
Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. Continue to Nelspruit.
