Ngoye (Ongoye) Forest Reserve is probably the most impressive indigenous forest reserve in KwaZulu-Natal because of its unique flora and fauna. The reserve lies about 11km from the coast between the Zululand towns of Empangeni, Mtunzini and Eshowe.
It is 3900ha in extent and the forest is not continuous with steep gullies and lichen covered rock domes overlooking the dense forest canopy. There are superb panoramic views over the valleys to the sea in the distance. Grassy glades are interspersed with dense forest with a wealth of ferns, attractive flowering species and rare cycads in the undergrowth. Many rare and endemic plant and animal species occur here. The forest also supports some magnificent butterflies including the rare Forest Green.
The bird life is truly spectacular with over 600 bird species and is a hotspot for serious bird watchers. Of the 85 forest species occurring in KwaZulu-Natal, 73 are found here.
A permit is required to visit the reserve and a small gate fee is charged in support of the local community that relies on the forest as a natural resource. However, the the sustainability of this unique reserve is of paramount importance and unbridled tourism will not be permitted.
