Situated in the grass and wetlands region of Mpumalanga, the Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve is location of the impressive Nooitgedacht Dam. The dam is the location for the annual Morula Fishing Festival and is thus a popular attraction among the fishing community of South Africa.
Visitors, many of whom stay at the Morula Sun and Casino Complex overlooking the reserve, can also enjoy a host of water sport activities on the Nooitgedacht Dam, and the reserve and dam is also popular for its birding opportunities. The wetland complex within the reserve protects a number of rare and endemic bird species, including the Rudd’s Lark, Botha’s Lark and Yellow-breasted Pipit.
The reserve is also home to some of the most spectacular scenery along the Komati River Gorge.
The Nooitgedacht Dam is popular among locals and visitors alike for picnicking, swimming, hiking and boating, and is a must-visit on any trip into this spectacular area of Mpumalanga.
Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. At Belfast, turn onto the R33 going South. Turn first left off the R33. Follow this road as it skirts around the outside of the reserve. At the T-junction, turn right. The entrance to the reserve is approximately 5km along this road on your right-hand side.
