Ntendeka Wilderness Area (Ngome Forest) is a fascinating area for the tree enthusiast and serious botanist. Situated in the Ngome Forest in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, the forest ranks among the best preserved in the province and is of great conservation value. Although there is animal life in the forest, it is for the flora and the fact that it is totally undeveloped that makes it so important.
The forest bird life is prolific although difficult to spot due to the dense canopy. With a bit of luck you will spot purple-crested turaco, narina trogon, forest buzzard and on the open areas, bald ibis, cuckoo hawk, crowned and martial eagle, secretary bird, trumpeter hornbill and many others.
The terrain is characterized by steep cliffs, deep gorges, densely forested valleys, spectacular waterfalls and above the cliffs, a gently undulating landscape. The incredibly rich forests are a rare combination of coastal and inland tropical species not found anywhere else in KwaZulu-Natal.
Accommodation is basic with camping sites for a maximum of 24 visitors. There are toilets, cold showers, a water tank and braai facilities. Wood is supplied. There is an extensive network of footpaths leading from the campsite throughout the area.
Getting there: From Vryheid, follow the Louwsberg Road for approximately 20km, then turn right onto the Nongoma Road (R618) and after another 50km turn right at the Ngome Forest signboard. You will find the office 600m from the gate.
From the coast take the Nongoma Road at Mtubatuba and proceed for about 40km past Nongoma on the Vryheid Road until you get to the Ngome sign.
