Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga

The Ohrigstad Dam in the Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve, MpumalangaSituated on the Drakensberg Escarpment in Mpumalanga, the Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve comprises 2500 hectares of pristine Lowveld bush. The Ohrigstad Dam within the reserve adds a welcome element of peace and tranquility to the visitor experience in this reserve.

Enjoy lazy days with picnic lunches in the shade or a relaxed canoeing outing on the Dam. The Dam is also popular with fishermen for its magnificent catches of carp, tilapia and catfish.

Ohrigstad is the oldest town on the Panorama Route, dating back to 1845. Evidence of Iron and Stone age relics is plentiful in the area, and can be found in the reserve. Enjoy sightings of the graceful mountain reedbuck and brown hyena within the calm of the mountains in the reserve.

The reserve is a worthwhile visit on any trip into the Panorama Route, and is popular for its proximity to the magnificent Blyde River canyon and all of its attractions.

Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. At Belfast, take the R540 going towards Dullstroom. Continue through Dullstroom. The road becomes the R36 going into Lydenburg. Continue through Lydenburg on the R36. Turn off at the R533. Approximately 10km along this road there will be a turn-off to your right going into the reserve.
