Ongoing Rescue and Recovery Operations at 75 Victoria Street

In a persistent effort by George Municipality, rescue and recovery operations persist into the second week following the incident at 75 Victoria Street, where a partially constructed building collapsed.

Dedicated rescue teams and collaborators have devoted 184 hours on-site.

The primary objective remains on rescue endeavors. Concurrently, the Municipality is proactively devising plans to expedite the identification process for the deceased, collaborating with the Forensic Pathology Service (FPS) and South African Police Service (SAPS). This expedited process aims to provide closure to affected families through methods like fingerprints, DNA testing, and documentation of unique identifiers such as tattoos and clothing.

The latest statistics concerning the incident are as follows:

  • Initial estimate of individuals present during the incident: 81
  • Rescued and accounted for 61
    – Deceased: 32
    – Hospitalized: 12
  • Unaccounted for 20
  • Acceleration of Pathology Services

Forensic Pathology Services extend beyond the Victoria Street Disaster to encompass ongoing cases. Notably, six of the deceased have been positively identified through this system.

Identification of Family Members

Efforts to accurately identify missing or deceased individuals are ongoing, with families urged to visit the George Civic Centre on York Street. This facilitates the Department of Social Development in gathering detailed and precise information for accurate documentation.

Stringent Verification Protocols

The Joint District Operations Centre employs a stringent double verification protocol crucial for maintaining accuracy in reported numbers of the deceased. This process involves cross-referencing information from reliable sources like recovery teams, hospitals, and forensic services.

Psychosocial Support

Urgent appeal for professional psychosocial support practitioners, particularly those fluent in Chewa, Portuguese, and Shona languages, to assist survivors and families. Interested practitioners can contact Ms. Kholiswa Jobela or Mr. Apolus Swart for coordination.

Ministerial and Official Visits

Scheduled visits from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Provincial and National Teams, alongside the National Minister of Employment and Labour, are significant acknowledgments of the ongoing efforts.

Special Requests and Gratitude
