The Woods transformed their dark Pretoria kitchen themselves using free-standing units, cabinets and accessories found online.

While it’s become the norm to order groceries and homeware online, it’s not often you come across homeowners who have purchased their kitchen off the Internet. Faron Wood and his wife, Carien, happened upon Milestone Kitchens on a trip to the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg. They loved the classic style of the cabinets and, as they had plans to revamp their existing kitchen, were intrigued to learn that all the cabinets, dressers and accessories could be ordered separately through the company’s website.

Back home in Irene, using the kitchen planner on Milestone’s website, they measured their existing kitchen noting the positions of windows, doors, power and plumbing points. They then made cut-outs of the various units they needed and arranged them on the grid. To make sure they had space for everything, Faron also sketched outlines of the units on the kitchen walls with chalk to check the spacing and to make sure there was an easy flow between the sink, stove and fridge.

They chose the English Elegance style and started off by ordering the seven-piece starter kitchen comprising a wall unit, spice rack, cutlery server, coffee dresser, grocery cupboard, sink unit and double-door unit. The solid pine pieces fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and can be professionally installed or left free-standing so that, should you wish, you can move them around at a later stage.

New white tile splashbacks, soft stone walls and stylish light fittings completed the kitchen’s transformation. The Woods gradually added all sorts of accessorising pieces like the microwave wall unit, breakfast stools and fun chopping boards.
