Being aware of your surroundings and knowing how to respond if you find yourself in a car or a hijacking situation is critical.
Fidelity ADT brings you these important security tips:
“The golden rule is to not antagonise the hijackers or carjackers who are probably more scared than you are. You need to show them you are not a threat. Lift up your arms to show you have no weapon and will surrender. Use your left arm to undo your seatbelt and put your car in neutral,” says Stuart Clarkson, Managing Executive for Fidelity ADT.
He says in the case of a hijacking do not turn off your car and get out slowly. “Try and angle your body sideways so you are not facing a firearm head-on. Also, remember to protect your head with your arms and avoid direct eye contact with the hijackers but try to take in as much information as possible, such as what they are wearing, and the sound of their voices. Most importantly, try to remain calm,” he says.
Clarkson says there are seven golden rules to follow if you are held up.
What should you do if you do find yourself face-to-face with a hijacker or carjacker?
- Remain calm.
- Do not argue.
- Do not make sudden gestures.
- Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the carjacker looked like by identifying and remembering special features.
- Comply with the hijackers/carjackers directions (within reason).
- Try and get away from the area as quickly as possible.
- Don’t be a hero — your life is worth more than your car!.
