Queen Rose Hiking Trail, Barberton, Mpumalanga

The Queen Rose hiking trail near Barberton is one of the most scenically beautiful hikes in the Mpumalanga region. Take in the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the natural surroundings as you traverse through kloofs with waterfalls and natural pools aplenty. Names such as Angel’s View Corner and Heaven’s Staircase leave little left to your imagination as to the scenic beauty of the trail.

The trail is a 21km, two-day, circular route that winds through both the Montrose and Queen’s rivers. On the descent into the Montrose River valley, you’ll find the ideal rest stop at the Alvin Falls, with it’s deep pool below. The climb going upstream of the Queen’s river takes you up Heaven’s Staircase to the top of the Kupid Falls. Adventurous climbers may also like to ascend up the wild kloofs adjacent to the falls.

Getting there: from Johannesburg, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. At Machadodorp, turn right onto the R541. Then, turn left at the T-junction onto the R38. Follow the R38 to the Nelshoogte Nature Reserve. The trail begins there.
