Empowering Polokwane Traffic Officers: RAF and SATMC Spearhead Tyre Safety Initiative
In a collaborative effort to bolster road safety measures, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) partnered with the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) to conduct a comprehensive tyre safety workshop in Polokwane. Held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, this initiative marked a significant stride in their joint “Treads on Track” road safety campaign, inaugurated the previous year.
The workshop aimed to equip traffic and road safety officers with enhanced knowledge through practical demonstrations, specifically targeting the improvement of tyre safety practices among motorists. Following the workshop, a practical application phase unfolded with a roadblock staged on Friday, February 9, 2024. Here, traffic officers put into practice the insights gleaned from the educational sessions.
Siphamandla Gumbi, RAF’s Senior Manager for Road Safety, underscored the workshop’s objective: “The Tyre Safety workshop sought to elevate the expertise of law enforcement and road safety officers on various facets of tyre safety. By partnering with tyre usage experts, we continue our commitment to combatting road crash injuries and fatalities. Through subsequent roadblocks, law enforcement officials extended this knowledge to motorists, thereby fostering greater awareness and reshaping road user mindsets.”
For two days, participants delved into crucial topics including the significance of tyre safety, identifying safe tyres (comprising aspects such as tyre construction, markings, fitment, tread depth standards, and more), proper tyre maintenance practices, and the hazards associated with illegal and unsafe second-hand tyres.
Nduduzo Chala, Managing Executive of SATMC, emphasized the concerted efforts of both organizations: “SATMC and RAF are steadfast in ensuring that traffic officers receive comprehensive training to effectively enforce tyre regulations. By doing so, we address the pressing issue of unsafe tyres and their detrimental impact on road safety across South Africa.”
This collaborative initiative stands as a testament to the commitment of RAF and SATMC towards fostering a safer road environment, underscoring the pivotal role of education and enforcement in mitigating road-related risks and promoting responsible driving practices.
