Revitalizing Marine Drive: A Gateway to KZN South Coast

Concentrix and Webhelp Extend Partnership

The highly anticipated rehabilitation of Marine Drive, the vital link connecting Port Shepstone with Southbroom in the KZN South Coast, is in full swing.

The ambitious project, launched by the Department of Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka in June, aims to upgrade 25 kilometers of Marine Drive (the P395) with a substantial investment of R580 million.

Construction is currently underway, with a temporary pause scheduled from December 14, 2023, to January 9, 2024, allowing holidaymakers access during the peak festive season. Despite potential inconveniences, the long-term gains promise to reshape the landscape for tourism and investment in the region.

Contractors on site are implementing a stop-and-go system, and resources will be increased if necessary to ensure access during the busy holiday period. According to Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), the rehabilitation, initiated in September, is anticipated to last around 30 months.

“We ask all residents and holidaymakers to bear with us as construction continues on Marine Drive,” Mangcu emphasized. The rehabilitation project not only addresses immediate accessibility concerns but also sets the stage for a massive upgrade to a vital regional network.

Beyond enhancing travel infrastructure, the project aligns with broader developmental goals, including bolstering tourism assets and unlocking investment potential across key sectors. The KZN South Coast, already renowned for its Blue Flag Beaches and diverse recreational offerings, anticipates another bustling festive season.

The region boasts additional attractions, such as world-class dive sites, hinterland excursions, township tours, and extreme adventures, making it a top summer destination for families.

In parallel with promoting tourism, the rehabilitation of Marine Drive is set to catalyze growth in sectors like the Port Shepstone business hub, agriculture, renewable energy, and the ocean economy. These initiatives align seamlessly with the ongoing KZN South Coast Buy Local campaign, encouraging support for local businesses.
