Riebeek Cellars is situated in the Swartland town of Riebeek Kasteel on the slopes of the Kasteel Mountain. The cellar was founded in 1941 as a cooperative to undertake the winemaking and marketing for the vineyards in the area. The traditions of wine making in the area go way back to the 17th century when the unique soil and climatic conditions in the Swartland were recognized as ideal for the production of deep, fruity wines.
The area is well known as one of the best areas for the production of the Shiraz reds but the varied soil and climatic conditions make it possible to produce a wide variety of reds and whites. The cellar has become very well regarded in South Africa and internationally as a socially conscious producer of award winning wines and is passionatre about the ideals of the Integrated Production of Wine, an initiative that aims to decrease the use of chemicals in the wine making process and to improve waste management.
Apart from Shiraz, the winery produces excellent Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs and has recently won the most prestigious trophy in South Africa for the best South African wine – the General Smuts Trophy. The whites, from the slopes and foothills of the Kasteelberg, are fresh and fruity, with prominent tropical fruit flavours, lingering citrus and subtle green notes. Delightfully light, distinctively different, full of character yet uncomplicated; the Riebeek Cellars Collection is young, drinkable, well balanced and suited to any occasion.
