Rijk’s Private Cellar was established in the Tulbagh Valley in 1996 by the Dorrington family. After searching for the right farm the family made the decision to start a farm from scratch in virgin soil with virus free vines. The Tulbagh area was chosen because of its outstanding climatic and soil conditions for the making of top quality premium wines. The fact that the valley, surrounded by the Winterhoek and Witzenberg Mountains is one of the most beautiful environments in the Western Cape and that vineyards had been established in the valley in the 1700’s, made the decision an easy one.
The legendary Gunther Brozel of Nederburg fame was retained to plan every minute detail of the cellar and the first grapes were harvested in 2000. Wines are kept in barrels for up to 20 months and then bottle aged for 2 to 4 years. Predictably, the wines have garnered an impressive number of awards including double golds at the Michelangelo International Awards and have been served by numerous airlines in the first class cabins.
Wine tasting takes place at the following times:
Monday to Friday 10H00 – 16H00
Saturday 10H00 – 14H00
Sunday Closed
