Riverbend Crocodile Farm was established in 1981 by the late Corky Kelly in Southbroom on the Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The farm was architecturally designed and landscaped to create an amazing natural environment in which the crocodiles and the prolific bird life thrive.
The original crocs were imported from the Victoria Falls and since then additional crocs from Namibia and South Africa have been added to create one of the most successful breeding centres in the country. The first crocodiles hatched in 1983. Today there are over 200 in the sanctuary where visitors can view them in their natural habitat.
An education centre provides visitors with information related to crocodile biology, and a comprehensive audio visual presentation in English, Afrikaans, German and Zulu runs continuously. This presentation also covers the life cycle of crocodiles and snakes and also details the day-to-day activities of the Farm. Crocodiles are fed weekly on Sundays at 15h00 and on certain advertised Wednesdays in summer.
The farm is run by Howard Kelly who holds daily feeding presentations in summer when the crocs go into a feeding frenzy – a spectacular show to say the least. The crocs consume over 5 kg of meat each at every feeding!
A Snake House was added in 2003 and now houses some of the most venomous snakes in South Africa. Nineteen different species are housed in modern enclosures so that visitors can get a birds eye of the snakes.
The farm is open daily from 9h00 to 16h30 except for Christmas Day and Good Friday.
