Riversonderend, a small village in the Cape Overberg, lies roughly between Caledon and Swellendam on the N2, about 160 kilometres from Cape Town. The village offers magnificent views across the Riviersonderend Valley, and sightings of the Blue Crane in the fields.
The Riviersonderend Mountains that begin at the village, and run east to west to Villiersdorp, separate the Breede River Valley from the Cape Overberg and create a beautiful backdrop to the town, providing some breath-taking hikes, kloofing and fishing opportunities.
The 4.4km Kleinbergie hiking trail, starting from Muller Street, in particular deserves mention – this trail affords you the opportunity to see some relics of the region’s history, the signal canons of the Overberg Signal Canon system, which can be found along the Old Cape Wagon Route on this trail. Enjoy beautiful displays of fynbos as you hike and once you reach the Sonderend River, you can have a great swim.
The Riviersonderend Photo Museum houses a collection of photographs, each of which tells a story of the history of the town.
