Robertson, which is 150 years old, has streets lined with ancient jacaranda and oak trees and beautiful gardens belonging to some very old homes with interesting architecture.
It is fondly referred to as the Valley of Wine and Roses and for good reason. With at least 50 wine cellars in the greater area of Roberton, Ashton, Bonniedale and McGregor, the selection is vast, with something for everyone. And then, the roses …. we are told that roses, less robust than vines are planted in abundance as an early warning system for soil or insect problems.
Add to this the local horse studs and you can see why this ambiance is an ideal setting for the Robertson Slow Festival that takes place in early August – voted as one of the best food & wine experiences in South Africa. Robertson is also an ideal base from which to visit the quaint towns of Bonniedale and McGregor.
Voortrekker Street has some interesting stops, including La Verne Wine Boutique which showcases the wine made in the area at cellar prices. Open from 9am Monday to Saturday and the Robertson Art Gallery which has works by well known South African artists. There is also a museum and a heritage walking route – the map is available at the tourism office, Cnr Reitz & Voortrekker Road.
