Rock climbing in Waterval Boven, Mpumalanga

Waterval Boven (meaning above the waterfall in Dutch) is widely hailed as the adventure playground of Mpumalanga.

The cliffs surrounding Waterval Boven, known as the ‘Restaurant at the End of the Universe’ Crags, have become home to one of the premier rock climbing destinations in South Africa and in the world. Every year, Waterval Boven is rated among the top 10 rock climbing spots in the world by the world’s best climbers.

These cliffs are a mecca for experienced climbers looking to test and challenge their climbing skills, and some of the sections are reserved for highly advanced climbers only. But if you’re a novice, and you’re looking for a fun adventure to enjoy with friends or the whole family, then the beginners outings are just for you!

Situated in one of the most spectacularly scenic areas of the country, there is simply no better way to enjoy the pleasures of nature here than a day spent rock climbing.

Getting there: from Johannesburg, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. Continue through Machadodorp and after a few kilometres, keep right at the R36 split, still following the N4. Wind your way down into the town of Waterval Boven.
