Royal Durban Golf Club, KwaZulu-Natal

Royal Durban Golf ClubRoyal Durban Golf Club is located in a unique setting within the Greyville Horse Racing Track – an oasis of calm in the bustling city of Durban, Kwa-Zulu-Natal. Founded in 1892, the club has a rich history – the first course had clay “greens” and the fairways were not planted. The grass was cut by an oxen-drawn reaper. In 1932 the course was re-designed by Bob Grimsdell and King George V gave the club the right to add “Royal” to the name.

Although the course is flat and lacks trees, it is one of the most demanding courses in South Africa – there is little protection from the wind making it rather difficult to negotiate when the wind is up. The signature hole is the par 4 ninth with the green placed between one of the few large trees and the fence of the racecourse.

The course hosted the Commonwealth Tournament in 1975 which saw an 18 year old Nick Faldo turn out at the beginning of his illustrious career.
