Secunda is a large coal refining town in Mpumalanga, the home of the massive ‘Sasol 2’ Oil Refinery, which produces oil and petrochemicals from coal, and which was built during the Apartheid years to produce fuel for a country cut off from oil suppliers due to the International Sanctions that South Africa suffered.
Secunda may not be the most attractive town from a distance, but it is paradoxically clean and also known as a friendly town. Secunda’s situation en-route to the attractions of the Mpumalanga Grass and Wetlands Region, as well as its size, mining and energy industry profile, commercial activity and extensive amenities, has encouraged the growth of the accommodation industry, as well as attractions such as the Graceland Hotel and Casino Complex with its Gary Player designed golf course.
Getting there: Take the N17 east from Johannesburg.
