Shelley Point, a rocky peninsula on the Cape West Coast, is typical of the laid back villages in this part of South Africa. The pristine coastline, with clear water and long white, sandy beaches, is dotted here and there by small fishing villages. The calm waters of Shelley Bay are ideal for sailing, fishing, world-class surfing, at spots known as ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’, and for children to safely play in the shallows and rock pools.
The waters here are rich in fish, crayfish, abalone and mussels, fed by the nutrients brought in by the cold Benguela current. And seafood is not the only marine life – whales (August to November) and dolphins (year round) love this spot too. Cormorants and the rare oystercatcher have also made this shoreline home, as have fishermen in the know.
The Shelley Point golf estate offers a 9-hole golf course and some wonderful leisure facilities, such as a spa in their Wellness Centre.
Part of the beauty of Shelley Point is the lack of shops, but Vredenburg, the economic hub for the area is close by.
Take the R27 and drive about 150 kilometres north of Cape Town.
