Nestled beside the Shingwedzi River in the mopane country of the northern Kruger National Park, Shingwedzi Rest Camp embraces the awesome scenery of the surrounding bushveld. The landscape here is one of the most stunning in all of the park, changing from autumnal bronze to fiery orange and brilliant green. The northern section of the Kruger is home to more than half the parks’ elephants and they are visible daily from the camp.
Vlakteplaas, an area just north of the camp, has the highest number of animal sightings per day in the park. One of the park’s best drives, the S-50, starts on the east side of the camp, and has plenty of loops to get you closer to the river to enjoy superior sightings of elephant, hippo and crocodile than anywhere else in the park.

Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N1 to Polokwane (Pietersburg). At Makhado (Louis Trichard) link up with the R524 and follow this route for ±140km. That will take you to the gate. Allow between 5 to 6 hours for the trip to the gate. Shingwedzi Rest Camp is 71km away from the gate. Allow about 3 hours for the drive to the camp
