The 1000ha Silwerfontein Guest Farm, situated in the mountains above the 8km long Voëlvlei Dam, is a natural heritage site. The farm supports thirty-five protea species, seven of which are endangered and one of which has only twenty-seven plants left in SA, all on this farm. There is also a herd of wild ponies on this organic and eco-friendly farm.
Silwerfontein is part of the 240km² Voëlvlei Nature Conservancy and has 10% of the geometric tortoise population in South Africa resident on the farm. In addition, over 200 bird species have been recorded here – a special place in anyone’s book. There are incredible views that will make any photographer happy.
There are two hiking trails in this gorgeous environment. A 15km circular trail of 7-8 hours or a two- day trail to Ontongs Cave, considered one of the best overnight caves in SA. Both hikes have beautiful views over the Voëlvlei Dam, the vineyards and mountains. They pass through magnificent fynbos and protected proteas.
There is safe parking at the Base Camp, to which you will go after signing in at the Silwerfontein farmhouse. A guide can be booked for the hike, but you will definitely have the company of the dog Gouda to show you the way – she will gladly accept supper as payment.
