Sir Robert Stanford Estate is situated on the slopes of the Kleinrivier Mountains, with a scenic vista over Stanford. The hand crafted grappa and fruit spirits are distilled on the farm, under the watchful eye of Johan de Villiers. The vineyards on the granite slopes overlooking the Kleinrivier Valley are ideal for producing wines which are an expression of the unique cool climate terroir.
This historic estate was producing wine in the 1890’s, but by 1935, the owner removed all the vines and stills to end “decadent” behaviour. Thank heavens, Jan and Madre Malan, started the millennium by restoring the vineyards producing the noble white and red varietals.
Today, you can visit the impressive tasting room, with its magnificent picture window looking out onto the farm and see “die Stookhuis” – a quaint distillery, with a large copper kettle over a wood burning fire – the ultimate experience in Grappa and fruit spirit tastings!
Farm hospitality and tradition rule at Robert Stanford Estate and visitors can explore the wine shop stocked with premium Overberg wines. And then, when you are ready, why not spoil yourself with a slow food meal at the renowned Madre’s Kitchen, where the Sir Robert Stanford wines can be paired with numerous delicious meals found on the Madre’s Kitchen menu.
A full day’s family outing all on one farm; wine, country shop, deli, meals and Grappa tasting.
