Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve lies at the foot of the rugged Spioenkop Mountains close to the towns of Bergville and Winterton in KwaZulu-Natal. The serenity of the open grasslands around the waters of the dam belies the fact that it was the site of one of the bloodiest battles fought during the Anglo-Boer War. The reserve is 6000ha is extent and was established in 1975
Today you can enjoy water sports and boating on the dam (boats must be registered with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife) as well as game viewing. A wide variety of antelope roam the plains as well as white rhino, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. There are numerous picnic sites around the dam and a 3km as well as a 6km walking trail wind along the dam’s southern shore.
