The Stellar Organic Winery, situated in the village of Trawal, started as an organic wine producer in the early days of organic wine production and made ground breaking strides into the production of no-added-sulphur wines. What started off as a product to supply a niche market has not only worked its way into mainstream sales but Stellar is currently the largest global producer of no-added-sulphur wines. The vineyards and winemaking process are organically certified by Control Union Certifications, based in the Netherlands.
The Winery is owned jointly by the Rossouw brothers and the Stellar Fairtrade Employees’ Trust, giving the workers a 26% share in the business. Stellar’s fair trade certification has delivered positive, measurable changes in working and living conditions to the Stellar workforce through the the global sales of fairly-traded wine. The surrounding Trawal community has also benefited from fair trade through the company’s support of local institutions such as the pre-school, primary school and football club.
