The Sudwala Caves are the oldest known caves in the world, making them an absolute must-see on any visit to Mpumalanga. Formed over 3000 Million years-ago, they originate from the pre-cumbrian dolomite rocks of the Malmani group, the second oldest sedimentary rock group in the world.
Within a fascinating array of chambers over 30 kilometers long, etched and carved by the flow of ancient seas, lie spectacular archaeological wonders for all to see. Amongst these, ancient stalagmites and stalactites, fossils of the first oxygen producing plant on earth and calcium formations that continue to grow patiently with the timeless trickle of water.
Cave tours are for one hour and take visitors 600m into the cave system and 150m underground. Enjoy spectacular photo opportunities and the harmonising sound of your own voice in the PR Owen hall, a natural amphitheatre with perfect, natural acoustics. Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. Continue along the N4 until getting to the R539. Take the R539 and then take the first turn right. Along this road, follow the signs to the Sudwala Caves, which are on your left-hand side.
