Surfing in Port Alfred is concentrated around the Kowie River mouth and the West and East Pier breaks, both of which can cook in the right conditions. When the conditions are perfect and the swell picks up it can get legendary.
The West Pier (West Beach) break is a left-break and can be good in a north-easterly wind, but it’s the East Pier (East Beach) that has put Port Alfred on the surfing map. When really good, this right-break can get big and peel off for up to 300 metres along East Beach in perfect tubes.
Again, sharks are generally are more common in river mouth areas, and Port Alfred is no exception.
