Swimming in the Mutale River Falls is just as good as placing a Jacuzzi in the middle of a wildlife-filled nature reserve!
To get to there you’ll need a 4×4 and once the track ends, it’s about a 10 minutes walk to the falls. The only concern that you will have is that you are in the Makuya Nature Reserve – home to leopard, lion, buffalo and all sorts of other wildlife. this will keep you on super alert mode, but after seeing the setting and swimming in the falls, you’ll know it’s all been worth it.
The Kruger National Park lies on the other bank of the Mutale River. They have dropped over 50km of fence between Makuya and Kruger, to ensure the animals have the right of way in this area.

The Luvuvhu and Mutale rivers flow through the provincial park, helping to form its landscape, characterised by edge-of-the-earth type viewpoints, dramatic sandstone ridges and beautiful baobabs. Here you’ll find nature in its truest form, which is the reason why hardly anyone knows about this reserve.
You can enjoy a few attractions in the Makuya Nature Reserve, which includes game watching, relaxing at Singo Safari Lodge, which has a swimming pool or at the rustic Mutale Falls Camp. However, the highlight of this vacation is swimming in the Mutale River Falls and if you are staying at the Mutale Falls Camp this will be your only option for a cooling swim. In fact, you will probably visit the falls several times a day.
The best time of day to visit the falIs would be at midday, when all the animals are resting in the shade. You can take along a picnic basket, but don’t forget an umbrella, especially if it’s hot. The best part is sitting in the many pothole-shaped pools – the gushing water leaves you feeling as if you just stepped out of one of nature’s Jacuzzis.
Just make sure you don’t leave after dark, the walk back will feel like a thousand miles and can can get quite hair-raising. This is one of those special wilderness experiences that is well worth the long drive even if it’s just for a weekend.
