South African radio personality Thabiso Khambule is a true champion of Mzansi. His love for the country runs deep, and it’s no surprise that the Jacaranda FM presenter is at the helm of the station’s brand-new ‘SA Music Show’, airing every Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00. Beyond curating the best of South African music, Thabiso is passionate about encouraging locals to explore the country’s hidden gems, he shares six of his favourite small towns and must-visit destinations across South Africa.
Graskop – Nature at Its Finest
Nestled in the heart of Mpumalanga, Graskop is a haven for nature lovers. Thabiso highlights God’s Window and the Graskop Gorge Lift Co as standout attractions. “God’s Window has one of the most spectacular views in Mzansi,” he says. “The name is completely justified—you stand above or in the clouds, looking over Mpumalanga.” Visitors can also explore the natural rock pools known as the Potholes, making Graskop a springtime paradise for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in lush, green scenery.
Kosi Bay – Adventure Awaits
Located in KwaZulu-Natal’s Maputaland region, Kosi Bay is a series of four interlinked lakes that offer a taste of Mozambique right here in South Africa. “I love Kosi Bay because it was my first snorkeling experience,” Thabiso recalls. “The waters are crystal clear, the fish are abundant, and the thrill of reaching the ocean requires a 4×4 adventure.” Wildlife encounters are frequent, with eagles, hippos, and rhinos often spotted nearby, making it a top pick for adventure seekers.
Dullstroom – A Winter Wonderland
Perched atop Mpumalanga’s highlands, Dullstroom is famed for its trout fishing and serene lakes. For Thabiso, the town holds sentimental value: “I got married in Dullstroom, so it’s very special to me. Winter is my favourite time there—you sit by the fireplace, feel the warmth, and enjoy the hospitality of the locals.” Visitors can fly fish, play a round at the Highland Gate Golf Club, or enjoy an interactive whiskey tasting at Wild about Whisky, home to over 500 varieties.
Augrabies Falls – The Power of Nature
In the Northern Cape, Augrabies Falls commands attention with its spectacular 56-meter drop along the Orange River. “Visiting during the rainy season was unforgettable—the waterfall was roaring, and it was breathtaking,” Thabiso shares. Often overlooked by tourists, Augrabies Falls is an underrated gem, perfect for road trippers heading toward Cape Town.
Sabie – Adventure and Forest Serenity
On the banks of the Sabie River, Sabie offers a mix of adventure and natural beauty. Close to the Kruger National Park, it’s a hotspot for both relaxation and adrenaline-fueled activities. Thabiso recommends: “If you want to stand among towering trees, experience abseiling, quad biking, river rafting, or even a Kruger safari, Sabie should be on your bucket list.”
Groblersbrug – Wildlife Up Close
Often overlooked as a border town between South Africa and Botswana in Limpopo, Groblersbrug is one of Thabiso’s personal favourites. “I love stopping at the Palala Boutique Game Lodge & Spa,” he says. “The service is world-class, and you get to see elephants, giraffes, eagles, and more along the drive. It’s a true bucket-list experience.”
Thabiso Khambule’s picks highlight South Africa’s rich landscapes, wildlife, and warm communities. Whether it’s adventure, relaxation, or breathtaking scenery, these destinations are a call to explore Mzansi like never before.
Thabiso Khambule hosts ‘Weekends with Thabiso Khambule’ every Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00, and ‘The SA Music Show’ every Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00 on Jacaranda FM.
