That loving feeling

Editor’s letter in the October Issue of Living and Loving Magazine by Tanya Kovarsky.

I’m the first to give a high five to social media like Facebook and Twitter, and blogs and websites where moms can mingle, chat and get support. But lately, I’ve been noticing that claws are coming out for moms who might not be doing things the “right” way, or choosing births, schools and feeding and sleep routines that differ to ours.

Tanya and MaxI’ve seen moms being badmouthed for feeding their babies solids at four months, women being judged for choosing to have Caesareans, and mothers being labelled for not breastfeeding.

A few months ago, I was called callous and hurtful for having my child circumcised, even though it conformed to my religious belief and practice. I think we have enough challenges as moms without being judged, most of the time by women who don’t even know us. I love that we have freedom of expression, but hate it when it comes at a cost of us feeling even guiltier about our choices, and even more inadequate as mothers.

Let’s nurture instead of negate each other, and let’s support moms, and not slander them, even when their feeding or working practices don’t mirror our own.

This is one thing our new website, www.livingandloving.co.za, promotes – it’s a place where you’re welcomed, valued and won’t be judged. We’ll do everything we can to give you content that reflects this.

If you feel we aren’t doing this, or want to comment on anything in this note, please drop me a line – tanyaktacaxton.co.za, @TanyaKovarsky (Twitter), or on our website, www. livingandlovingiacaxton.co.za

Have a wonderful October!
