The Alpaca Loom Studio is on the farm Baviaanskrans of Jane and Ian Tyrer less than ten minutes from Montagu. Jane and Ian and their team shear, clean, spin and weave the alpaca fibre into all manner of fabric, scarves, jackets and other items.
The alpaca are calm animals and many of them enjoy being hand fed, so take your camera.
There is a large range of exquisitely soft and reasonably priced finished garments for sale in both natural shades and hand dyed colours; knitters will find a supply of soft hand-spun wool. Being Scottish, Ian and Jane specialize in weaving Tartans, which are woven to order and exported to Scots all over the world. They also take orders for garments and fabrics in the weave and colours of your choice.
Directions: The Alpaca Loom is on the Ouberg Pass Road, which is an alternative and interesting route to both Ladismith and Touwsriver. To find Alpaca Loom, head East out of Montagu on the R62, Barrydale direction. As you cross the river and come up the hill, you will see the sign, pointing you to the left onto the Talana road. After 500m on this tar road, turn left again onto the big dirt Ouberg Pass road. Alpaca Loom is less than seven km along on the right, well signposted.
